Lee Corso’s College GameDay Legacy Lives On through a Celebration for Teachers

For more than 35 years, former head coach Lee Corso was a beloved part of fall Saturday mornings on ESPN’s College GameDay morning show that was always capped with his iconic tradition of donning mascot headgear of the premier game of the week. On Saturday, August 30, Corso made his final headgear pick, closing the tradition the same way it began in 1996, by lifting Ohio State’s Brutus the Buckeye head and putting it on his own, bringing his television journey full circle.

The College Football Playoff Foundation is celebrating Corso in a way that reflects his ties to Miami, the host city of the 2026 national championship game, and his connection and love for college football. During Extra Yard for Teachers Week, the CFP Foundation made a special donation to Miami Jackson Senior High School in his honor. Located in Miami, the school, which is Corso’s alma mater, will receive funding to strengthen classroom resources for both teachers and students.

To continue the celebration, the CFP Foundation joined forces with the NFL Foundation, collecting a limited number of mascot heads that represent Corso’s most memorable picks, including Ohio State, LSU, Alabama, and Texas. These exclusive pieces of memorabilia will be signed and auctioned online. Opening bids coincided with the start of Extra Yard for Teachers Week on September 13, and the auction will close on October 14. Bids will begin at $1,000, with proceeds supporting the CFP Foundation’s ongoing mission to recognize, resource, and retain PK-12 educators nationwide.

The CFP Foundation is proud to honor Coach Corso’s legacy through a celebration that benefits the educators who are shaping the next generation.
