CFP Foundation Debuts Four New “It Only Takes One” Videos During Extra Yard for Teachers Week

September 14, 2018

Football Legends Tony Dorsett, Daryl Johnston, “Mean” Joe Greene, and Herschel Walker Each Tell the Story of a Teacher Who Made a Difference in Their Life

IRVING, Texas – The College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation will debut four vignettes from college football legends as part of the fourth annual Extra Yard for Teachers (EYFT) Week, held September 15-22. The vignettes, which will debut on EYFT social media channels, feature former student-athletes Tony Dorsett (Pitt), “Mean” Joe Greene (North Texas), Daryl Johnston (Syracuse), and Herschel Walker (Georgia).

The “It Only Takes One” series debuted last fall with vignettes featuring Troy Aikman (UCLA), Tim Brown (Notre Dame), Russell Maryland (Miami), and Darren Woodson (Arizona State). Each legend tells the story of the pivotal role a teacher played in their development. The eight vignettes are scheduled to be shown on the stadium video boards during select home games at each player’s respective alma mater and on social channels of the school’s respective conference.

“Every person can point to a teacher in their lives who inspired them or made a significant impact,” said CFP Foundation Executive Director Britton Banowsky. “We’re thankful that these legends of the game are willing to share their stories about the one educator who made a difference for them, reminding us how important teachers are and how it truly only takes a single person to inspire a lifetime of hard work and success.”

Tony Dorsett tells the story of Mrs. McMullen, whom he credits with teaching him accountability by holding him back one year and allowing him to grow at his own pace. Daryl Johnston talks about Mrs. Lazonis, a young teacher who took the time in her approach and “made school fun again.” Joe Greene’s first grade teacher, Mrs. Powell, was instrumental in getting him to pay attention in class and set the tone for his career as a student. Herschel Walker honors Coach Jordan, a man who helped him look at things differently and gave him confidence to compete in the classroom and in athletics.

The CFP Foundation created EYFT Week in 2015 to provide an opportunity for universities, coaches and student-athletes to take part in its mission of elevating the teaching profession through inspiring and empowering teachers, and to create awareness for the growing EYFT platform. Now in the event’s fourth year, the CFP Foundation is looking to build even more momentum for the support of teachers nationwide.

The success in raising awareness and support is largely due to the unique, impactful relationships that the CFP Foundation has built with the 10 FBS conferences and their member institutions, as well as the University of Notre Dame. Through these relationships, along with strong partnerships with bowl games, college athletics has positively affected education. Since 2014, EYFT programming and events have supported more than 150,000 teachers nationwide, reached 4.6 million students, and benefitted more than 20,500 schools across the country.
