AT THE 2020 COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN NEW ORLEANS 

The College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation, in conjunction with the popular platform of college football and the CFP National Championship, creates the opportunity to support education across the country, including a primary focus on the host community during National Championship week and beyond. 

Founded in 2014, the CFP Foundation is the largest initiative ever undertaken by a U.S. sport entity to support and uplift the teaching profession. Since its inception, the CFP Foundation has:  

  • Supported more than 250,000 teachers nationwide 

  • Reached 6 million students 

  • Benefitted more than 28,000 schools 

  • Guided a nationwide effort that has led to a $30 million investment in support of education  

Extra Yard for Teachers The CFP Foundation’s primary platform, Extra Yard for Teachers (EYFT), is dedicated to elevating the teaching profession by inspiring and empowering teachers. EYFT focuses on four key areas: resources, recognition, recruitment and professional development   The 2020 CFP National Championship The 2020 CFP National Championship will be played at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Monday, January 13. There are many events surrounding the weekend of the game, and there are fantastic opportunities to enjoy the festivities while supporting the CFP Foundation and Extra Yard for Teachers. Most of these fun events will take place in the area known as “Championship Campus,” located in downtown New Orleans: 

Media Center Makeover Reveal  

KIPP Central City – 2514 Third Street, New Orleans, LA 70113 

Thursday, January 9, 2020 (10 a.m. reveal, 10:15 a.m. surprise addition) – please arrive no later than 9:45 a.m. 

One of the many ways the CFP Foundation continues to uplift and empower teachers is by providing teachers, classrooms and schools with quality resources that provide excellent learning environments. The Foundation has joined up with School Specialty to implement a Media Center Makeover for KIPP Central City. The makeover focused on primary work areas for the media center, including new computer stations, tables, chairs, and comfortable seating areas for reading and studying. The CFP Foundation’s education partners ensure that the resources are used to provide what teachers require in order to prepare their students for success. School Specialty (provided furniture/installation), Veative (invested in virtual reality headsets), the New Orleans College Football Championship Host Committee (NOCFCHC) and the Sun Belt Conference also supported the work.

Battle of the Bands, powered by Entergy, produced by Little Kids Rock

Friday, January 10, 2020 (9 a.m. – noon bands perform; Approx. noon/12:30 p.m. finalists announced) 

In the spirit of celebrating teachers and making them feel valued, the CFP Foundation and partners Entergy and Little Kids Rock are hosting Battle of the Bands, a recognition of the value of music education and music teachers. Bands from local schools will perform as part of a competition that showcases musical talent and performance. Finalists will be named after Friday’s performances to compete at the Extra Yard for Teachers Summit on Saturday, January 11 (4 p.m. at The Fillmore). New Orleans schools scheduled to participate include: Lusher Charter High School, Ben Franklin Math & Science School, McDonogh 35, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, with several schools also pending. Celebrity judges for the event are being finalized.

Extra Yard for Teachers Summit 

The Fillmore New Orleans – 6 Canal St., New Orleans, LA 70130 

Saturday, January 11, 2020 (4-7 p.m. CT) 

The CFP Foundation hosts a VIP, educator-only event designed to inspire and empower teachers, where admission is free for any educator or administrator. The summit features a talk by the National Teacher of the Year Rodney Robinson, the final round of an epic Battle of the Bands competition, powered by Entergy (see above), and a headline performance by teacher-turned-comedian Eddie B. All in attendance get the chance to win giveaways, including a pair of tickets to the national championship game and a library/media room makeover valued at $50,000. Ending the evening with an after party, teachers will have the chance to connect with peers from the Summit and the 2019 State Teachers of the Year from all 50 states. Partners include School Specialty, DonorsChoose.org, Lakeshore Learning, Game Tickets Giveaway, Chick-fil-A, Dr Pepper, Dos Equis, and Southern Comfort.

Extra Yard 5K  

Lafayette Square (S. Maestri Place) 

Sunday, January 12, 2020 (8 a.m. CT) 

Recognizing and celebrating teachers while raising money to help them with resources, the Extra Yard 5K is a family-friendly run/walk in conjunction with the CFP National Championship. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each age group. In addition, the Top Overall Male and Top Overall Female will each win two tickets to the 2020 national championship game. Registration includes a participant shirt, a finisher's medal, a race bib, and one entry into a drawing to also win a pair of tickets to the national championship game. All proceeds benefit Extra Yard for Teachers. Partners include Nike, Southern Comfort and Fireball.

Playoff Fan Central Extra Yard for Teachers Panel with Rachel Lindsay and Charlie Ward

Recognizing great teachers, 1993 Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward (Florida State) chats with CFP Ambassador and media personality Rachel Lindsay about the personal impact that teachers have had on their lives. The pair will also dive into the opportunities they have experienced in their lives through education, while also talking college football.

Eckrich Taste of the Championship presented by Thrillist

Raising funds that will directly to help teachers, the Eckrich Taste of the Championship presented by Thrillist is a premium dining experience on the eve of the national championship game, offering local residents and national championship game attendees the opportunity to sample gourmet food and drink from New Orleans chefs in support of the CFP Foundation. The 2020 edition of this premium event serves as a unique combination of an exploration of local cuisine and a celebration of the teaching profession. All proceeds benefit the CFP Foundation’s Extra Yard for Teachers initiative.

Allstate Championship Tailgate Plaza Eckrich Teacher Toss

Monday, January 13, 2020 (Approximately Noon – 1:30 p.m.; exact time TBD) 

Raising money that will directly support teachers with classroom resource needs, the Eckrich Teacher Toss is a fun event where educators throw footballs through a target. Each made toss during the event will result in a $1,000 donation to the CFP Foundation. ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit will attempt his own throw challenge as well; if he makes it, Eckrich will donate $1 million to the CFP Foundation.
