CFP Foundation and Bay Area Host Committee Hold STEAM in the Stadium

49ers Alumnus Dennis Brown Joined Bay Area Students and Teachers at Levi's® Stadium to Use the Game of Football to Learn About Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM)
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation and the Bay Area Host Committee (BAHC) today hosted STEAM in the Stadium, a special and fun exhibition of learning for local students. Using the game of football as a platform, students learned about science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) at different stations in and around Levi's® Stadium, as a part of 49ers EDU.
STEAM in the Stadium featured former San Francisco 49ers defensive end Dennis Brown as a special guest, alongside representatives of the CFP Foundation, the BAHC and 49ers EDU, who welcomed 250 Bay Area students to the event.
“We are thrilled to partner with the Bay Area Host Committee on STEAM in the Stadium as part of the overall effort to positively impact teachers and students in the Bay Area,” said CFP Foundation Executive Director Britton Banowsky. “49ers EDU has been tremendous in their focus and effort on STEAM-related initiatives, making today’s event possible. We’d also like to thank 49ers alumnus Dennis Brown for his participation.”
Classroom lessons for the students included “Tackling Literacy” emphasizing the importance of reading, and “Goal Line Math” to see how mathematics is used in football and how stadiums use different angles and measurements. “Gridiron Engineering” showed students how engineering, design and technology have helped evolve the game, as participants had their chance to design and build their own facemasks. “Museum Experience” gave the kids a chance to interact and learn about the history of the 49ers through the many galleries, while “Stadium Experience” took students around different spots at Levi's® Stadium to learn how design and engineering played a pivotal role in building an environmentally-friendly stadium. Finally, the “Movement Lab” gave attendees the chance to participate in kinesthetic drills and learn how health and fitness are important to our bodies and minds.
STEAM in the Stadium is part of the overall effort of the CFP Foundation’s primary platform, Extra Yard for Teachers, which is dedicated to elevating the teaching profession by inspiring and empowering teachers. Leading up to the CFP National Championship on Jan. 7, the CFP Foundation and the BAHC host STEAM-related initiatives in the Bay Area, including professional development training through 49ers EDU, a DonorsChoose.org Super Fund for STEAM-themed projects, and other initiatives like STEAM in the Stadium that are unique to the community.
“It’s important to engage both educators and students in STEAM subjects through alternative avenues outside of the classroom like the CFP Foundation’s STEAM in the Stadium initiative,” said BAHC Education Director Jesse Lovejoy. “These efforts, leveraging the power of sports as a conduit, make STEAM more approachable and relatable, and we’re proud to partner with the CFP Foundation to engage as many students and educators in these subjects as possible.”
